Krisarthak – A Program on financial education and counseling

Krisarthak also known as financial education and counseling (FEC) is a program designed for the farm community of Assam. It is a one-of-a-kind program that aims to deliver financial literacy and counseling using digital and ICT tools.

Various research and studies conducted on the farm community of Assam have revealed that there has been a constant need to “add value and improve the resilience of selected agriculture value chains focusing on smallholder farmers and agro-entrepreneurs in districts of Assam”. The productivity enhancement suffers mostly due to the lack of access, demand, uptake, and responsible use of financial services by the greater farming community in this region.

As one of the core components of the World Bank-funded Project APART (Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation) Krisarthak (FEC) aims to address the issues mentioned above. It aims to reach out to the members of Farmer producer companies (FPC) who are APART beneficiaries across 24 districts of Assam. The program’s objective is to enhance financial inclusion among the farmers by spreading awareness about financial products and services through financial literacy.

However, issues like fragmented landholding, illiteracy, remoteness of villages and ignorance have been major obstacles to achieving financial inclusiveness in society. There is an acute need for awareness among the masses regarding the core banking services and products such as savings, loans, pensions, insurance and payments.
